The Details!
Name Badges: There will be blank badges and sharpies available the night of the event.
Covid Guidelines: Fairfield County has no current Covid mandates. That said, we hope you'll do a rapid test before arriving. We want our get-together to be memorable, but not that memorable! Masks are optional.
Shout-Outs: A huge thank you to Stew Leonard, Jr. for providing the food for Sunday's beach event and to committee member Joan Wright for subsidizing that event by using some of her Compass-realtor promotion budget. (Note that an open-air Compass tent will mark where we'll be congregating on Sunday.) Joan is a long-time local realtor who has helped many Staples grads buy and sell homes. Having used her twice, I can tell you that she is fabulous! Additional shout-outs to Rick Croarkin for so generously giving us the seed money to get things rolling, to Bruce Brodie for designing the Class of '72 signs you'll see as you enter our event room at the Gaelic-American Club, and to Linda Franco Doyle for designing a poster memorializing the names of our deceased classmates.
Reunion Events:
FRIDAY NIGHT INFORMAL GATHERING AT THE BLACK DUCK
Time: 7-9 pm
Address: 605 Riverside Avenue, Westport. For those of you who don't know, the Black Duck is a short walk from the Westport Train Station. It's next to Tutti's restaurant, but on the river rather than on Riverside Avenue itself.
Dress: Casual
What to Expect: The Black Duck event is just a casual get-together. We are not taking over the place. The usual Friday night crowd will be there, and it will probably be noisy inside. We are not providing food. You can order whatever you want to eat or drink and, if desired, break off with a group of friends and go somewhere else later in the evening.
SATURDAY AFTERNOON INFORMAL GATHERING AT COMPO BEACH
Time: 12-3 pm
Where to Meet: By the cannons
What to Expect: The Saturday beach event is super casual as well. We’re just providing a place to congregate and giving out-of-towners a way to get into the beach without a sticker. (We obtained a permit. Just say you're with the Class of '72, and the guards will let you in.) If you want to eat and drink, you should bring your own food or come prepared to buy something at the concession shack. In other words, this is not an event per se. We just wanted those of you who were at loose ends on Saturday to have a place to go.
SATURDAY NIGHT MAIN EVENT AT THE GAELIC-AMERICAN CLUB
Time: 6-10
Address: 74 Beach Road, Fairfield. The GAC is the second building on your right after you make the turn onto Beach Road off the Post Road. I've attached a picture of the small sign that is at the head of the long driveway that leads to the club. Across the street is a periodontics office and next door is the Abraham L. Green & Son funeral home. If you pass the First Congregational Church, you've gone too far. Note that there is extra parking at the church, and there are steps from the church lot to the GAC main entrance.
Dress: Anywhere from country club casual to cocktail attire
What to Expect: We'll be providing a buffet meal with meat, chicken and vegetarian options. The food won't be fancy but will fill you up. There will be a cash bar that takes only cash, not credit, so bring some $$ if you want to drink. The Reunion Band will be playing for an hour or so, which leaves plenty of conversation-friendly time to reconnect with old friends and make new ones.
SUNDAY GET-TOGETHER AT COMPO BEACH
Time: 12-4
Where to Meet: We'll be on South Beach by the stand of trees facing Owenoke Park, which is to the left of the boat launch. As I said above, look for our open-air tent marked with the word "Compass" written on it. Make sure to tell the guard at the entrance that you're with the Class of '72 reunion so they'll let you in without a beach sticker.
What to Expect: Several people have indicated that the only event they're planning on attending is the Sunday beach get-together, so we're expecting a good crowd. Food and drinks will be provided.
